As the dust settles around the hooves of the mounted militia and cowboys who rode in support of Cliven Bundy and backed down the Federal Government, it might be a good time to ask, what was it really all about anyway?
Cliven Bundy raises cattle in Nevada. He and his family have been grazing cattle on open land for generations. For many years he was charged a grazing fee by the Federal Goverment that manages the land under the office of the Bureau of Land Management.
Some year ago Bundy stopped paying his grazing fees. The government took him to court to collect. They won, he lost. According to the BLM he owes more than a million dollars.
Bundy refused to pay so the government went in and started to round up his cattle off of the land. Bundy found a way to make a stand against that effort and along the way a lot of other folks joined in. But did they know what the issue really was, or were they just inspired to do anything to stand up against the government?
So here is the issue, according to Bundy, in an interview with Glenn Beck:
Essentially, Bundy is saying this conflict isn’t inherently about grazing fees or water rights, but that he ultimately does not recognize the lands to be federal and the United States government or the BLM do not have jurisdiction on the land.
“So I think this is very clarifying to people,” Glenn said.
“It’s not BLM land. It’s Nevada land,” Bundy said.
“That is a different point of view than everybody else that is a rancher that I know,” Glenn said.
Based on the conversation on the radio show, Bundy’s fundamental issue isn’t with an out of control government taking control of his personal land, but that he disagrees with how that land became federal land when Nevada was founded in 1864. [Glenn Beck]
In a lot more detail Bundy has made the argument that when Nevada became a state the Federal Government lost jurisdiciton over the land that was, prior to statehood, federal territory.
Do you really think that all those people cheering for Bundy and the protesters understood this, agree with this, realize that this issue has already been tried and failed in court?
Bundy, it seems, was acting in contempt of court orders. In a land of law and order have people really gotten to the point where they celebrate and support open defiance of the law?
If so, have they invited perahps some unintended consequences?
