Kenton County:
Let's make this simple. Experience counts when it comes to running the business of a county government. There are a lot of moving parts and standing on the outside picking at feathers isn't the same thing as owning up to decisions. For these reasons the business of Kenton county deserves the experienced hands of Beth Sewell, Jon Draud and Joe Koester.
Boone County:
Cathy Flaig tops a list of many who seek a spot on the Boone Fiscal Court. But few people know the political wranglings and budgetary concerns of Boone County better than Cathy. She has been a "no" vote on the side of the people when that was not the way to earn points with her fellow fiscal court members. She dared to challenge incumbent Judge Executive Gary Moore and has helped to put together a group of TEA party folks in Boone that displaced the mainstream republican party apparatus. Her history with the county, her service to its citizens and her independent spirit are all exactly what Boone needs. It's simple, Cathy Flaig should be back on the court.
Charlie Walton has a long history of public service both with the school systems and in county government. But lately his approach to politics has become a bit less inspired than it once was. He is being challenged by former Florence Police chief Tom Szurlinski.
Szurlinski is a go getter. He completed law school and now is working with the highly skilled firm of Phil Taliaferro. To complete law school alone is no small feat. To do it as a second career is a daunting task. To become associated with such a stellar lawyer speaks volumes to Tom's abilities.
Charlie has had a good run but the time has come for new blood. Tom Szurlinski will be a valuable addition to the Boone Fiscal Court and deserves to be elected.
Charlie Kenner likewise has had a good run in politics. Additionally his professional services in the community and with our military deserve great respect. But the winds of change have blown through Boone County government and Kenner's time has passed.
Phyllis Sparks might seem an unlikely endorsement here. She didn't miss an opportunity to strike at me when she was helping run Thomas Massie's campaign and in the world of politics the rule has always been to reward your friends and punish your opposition. But that is not how I operate. Sparks is a fireball. She has very definite opinions and isn't afraid to express them, defend them or fight when challenged. I think a little time in the barrel might temper her toward a more diplomatic approach to the fact that not everybody thinks the same way, but when it comes to developing leaders one thing you can't teach is determination. Sparks is a very determined and vocal activist when it comes to political issues. Her quick mind and intensity will serve the people of Boone County very well. She deserves a seat on the fiscal court.
