The latest carnage at a school perpetrated by Karl Pierson at Arapahoe High in Colorado isn't making the 24 hour news cycle. Why? Well, here are a few pieces to the puzzle that might help you understand why the media isn't banging this drum very loudly.
In a profile on the shooter in the Denver Post which focused on his “strong political beliefs,” several of Pierson’s classmates offered their impressions of the shooter. One of the shooter’s classmates described him as a “very opinionated socialist.” Shortly after that post was published, however, that description was edited out. The current copy simply describes him as “very opinionated.” [Mediate]
“He didn't seem to have mental illness. He had a lot of friends. He was outspoken. There have been a couple stories that he was bullied and that's a recurring theme we see sometimes with these shootings. But again, there's no rhyme or reason,” [Colorado Governor John] Hickenlooper said in an interview with CBS’ “Face the Nation” Sunday.
He also said the two things Coloradans care “deeply” about are Second Amendment rights and making their communities safer. “So things like universal background check, I think they are going to make it safer, but in this specific case, aren't going to make a difference at all,” he said. [CBS]
According to The Christian Science Monitor, the school's armed guard began running toward the sound of the shooter as soon as the first shots were fired. Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson said that as a result of the guard's action, "the heavily-armed shooter realized he was about to be confronted by an armed officer and took his own life."
On December 21, 2012, the National Rifle Association's Wayne LaPierre responded to the heinous crime at Sandy Hook Elementary by stressing the need for armed guards in America's schools. Said LaPierre, "The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun."
Fortunately, there was a good guy with a gun in Arapahoe High School on December 13th.[Breitbart]
