It was 1961. A bunch of 8-10 year old boys in my neighborhood were engaged in some usual "tackle the guy with the ball" activity. A girl, rather tall for her age, joined in. I remember here tackling me. But unlike the other "boys" she wanted to fist fight. I was stunned. I remember to this day asking my mom's advice.
I told her that a girl wanted to play rough with the boys but that she was being "too rough" and I didn't know what to do. In those days we were strictly taught that you never hit a girl. My mom's words are as clear half a century later as they were that day. She said "Next time she gets too rough, you just pin her to the ground, look her in the face and tell her that if she isn't going to act like a girl, you aren't going to treat her like one." I did exactly that. She never came back to play.
The lesson is that sometimes, some people will try to get a special advantage that doesn't belong to the other players on the field. As I heard on the radio yesterday regarding Barack Obama, he is the recipient of what Michael Gerson once called the "soft bigotry of low expectations." In other words Obama is the cunning beneficiary of special treatment which is its own form of bigotry.
Then I read that the DSCC it going to try to raise money off of a comment attributed to a McConnell advisor that Alison Lundergan Grimes is an "empty dress". Emily's List, a progressive women's group dedicated to electing liberal women to office made a call for action against McConnell over the comment.
But even-though these Liberals have been attacking the "empty dress" comment it turns out that it was very accurate: she's been bumbling every question to come her way and relying on talking points from Chuck Schumer when she finally responds. And literally, the instances that were referred to in the comment, she was wearing a dress!
Sheesh! Anything for a fundraising push and a chance to complain about a "war on women." But, by doing this, Democrats are basically confirming Grimes doesn't have a clue about the issues.
Even more surprising is the phony outrage by Alison Grimes and her liberal allies while staying silent about Kentucky Dems embroiled in an actual sexual assault scandal! The investigation is happening in the building Grimes works in!
This is the 2012 playbook all over again and it's just as absurd.
Where was the outrage when the DSCC called Josh Mandel an "empty suit" or a HuffPo said Sarah Palin was a "demagogue in a skirt"?
Look, "empty suit"/"empty dress", what's the difference? After all, hasn't America tired by now of people trying to get a special advantage for themselves due to race, gender or religion? My mom thought so half a century ago, but then again, that was back when rules of fair play still existed in America.
