After stumbling from the gate Alison Lundergan Grimes seemed to have no traction whatsoever. Yesterday she tried again with a splashy roll out of her campaign. Surrounded by big names in the Democrat party, including a video endorsement by Bill Clinton, with a huge banner as a backdrop, Grimes made a splash.
But she also made a big mistake. Just like the fizzled start of the Matt Bevin campaign, the only thing Grimes talked about was getting rid of Mitch McConnell. That's a failed strategy.
Running against someone requires that the incumbent have committed some sort of scandal, such as say, letting a young intern give you oral sex in the Oval Office, or ordering troops to stand down as you Ambassador to Libya is killed and his dead body dragged through the streets. The only complaint about Mitch is that he has been TOO effective. And that's just silly.
Grimes made it clear, though she may have some as yet undefined disagreement with Barack Obama over some as yet unspecified details of Obamacare, she wants to go to Washington DC to give the democrats another vote in the senate and help remove the most effective counter force to the Obama agenda from his position as what could very likely be the majority leader.
Sure, there is a small group of anti-McConnell people in the democratic party, but for the most part the biggest players in Kentucky politics have all been embraced by McConnell in some way or another, and to send him packing in exchange for another democratic vote in this day and age is about as far fetched an idea as John McCain ever becoming president.
Once again, Grimes designed and pulled off a big rally with good looking props. But it will be the best day she has for the next year plus as she once again announced her official role as "sacrifical lamb 2013" albeit with great fanfare.
If you don't acknowledge McConnell poll numbers, you are not dealing with reality. Or the major players in Washington feeling he may very well lose. Keep pretending there is nothing to worry about.

In order to address a problem one must first admit one has a problem - Mitch is the problem and Grimes is addressing it. People like Mitch and Rand are a cancer on the body politic.
