In one session after another today and tomorrow at this year's Kentucky Bar Convention the theme of talk after talk is little more than the expression of fear that voters cannot be trusted to choose judges. The trend is very clearly stated that the time has come for the appointment of judges.
On one hand fear is being expressed that the influence of "big money" will skew the election of judges in favor of a few wealthy donors with a private agenda. Numerous references to the 4th district congressional race and the questionable money donated by a Texas college student have been made.
What the panelists, including former US Supreme Court justice Sandra Day O'Connor, have essentially said is that an elite committee should choose judges because citizens don't understand enough to be given that responsibility.
The people of Kentucky should be very concerned when the selection of judges is being treated as beyond their level of understanding and trust.
As for me, I'd rather trust a citizenry to choose its future than a panel of lawyers and political appointees. And I am warning you, the effort to take that away from you is receiving a full court press in Louisville this week.
