This year is destined to be a difficult one. Real people are facing joblessness, loss of their homes, the destruction of their retirement accounts, the failure of the system of government entitlements, looming war with Iran, world economic collapse and of course the upcoming elections of a new congress and president.
What used to be an optimistic nation is now on the verge of despondency. Four years ago an historic presidential campaign promised hope. It did not deliver. The world seems to be crashing down upon us. For the first time in nearly a century, Americans feel the loss of control over their own destinies.
Is there anything that can restore us? What can we do? Have we no choice but to watch in paralyzing fear as events unfold in front of us, sweeping us along toward uncertainty?
The answer is no. Can we solve all of the world's problems overnight? Unfortunately, no. But there are specific problems which we have it in our power to solve, and which when considered as steps in the right direction, can give us the sense of accomplishment that renews our confidence and infuses the world with real hope.
Here's what we do first. America is a nation born out of the humble acceptance that God rules the world and our job is to do God's will on earth. First, trust no one to tell you what it is that God wants of you. Pray that God inform your heart and mind with clarity for guidance, and grant to you the courage to act accordingly.
As Patrick Henry said when arguing in favor of declaring war against the most powerful military force on the earth at the time
[W]e are not weak if we make a proper use of those means which the God of nature hath placed in our power. The millions of people, armed in the holy cause of liberty, and in such a country as that which we possess, are invincible by any force which our enemy can send against us. Besides, sir, we shall not fight our battles alone. There is a just God who presides over the destinies of nations, and who will raise up friends to fight our battles for us.
Begin this year with renewed and more vigorous dedication to this one foundation stone "In God we trust".
Second, dedicate yourself to the "holy cause of liberty". It is in your hands to determine who will be our next Congress. Every single one of the 435 seats is up for election. Make certain that there will be no "politics as usual". Speak to your neighbors, become engaged and make certain with every ounce of your energy that we elect men and women dedicated to the cause of liberty.
Liberty is not a thing. It is an environment. As Lincoln might have said, it is the womb in which our nation was conceived.
This new year, resolve yourself to insuring that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom - and that government of the people, by the people and for the people shall not perish from the earth.
Lift your heads, lift your hearts, get up, dig deep and bring your neighbors along with you into the battle. Our lives depend on it.
