After taking a day or so to think about Obama's war speech, reading dozens of other opinions and listening to pundits from both sides of the aisle, there is no doubt that the President has given his friends on the left the loss they have been hoping for.
Winning wars means defeating an enemy, bending him to the breaking point, demanding surrender or destroying him. Losing wars means bending to the enemy, withdrawal, retreat, taking your toys and going home.
When Obama told the world that he was caving in to the military and reluctantly giving them about half of what they requested, but with conditions, our focus should be on the conditions. You see, what Obama has said to the world is that we are outta there in 18 months no matter what.
He didn't say we are determined to win. He didn't demand the surrender of the enemy. He made no attempt to guarantee that we would fight to win. Instead he told Al Qaeda that we would fight until July of 2011 and quit, take our toys and go home regardless how things were going by then.
As one friend put it, Al Qaeda should be holding a celebration of victory. The withdrawal of our troops has now been announced. All they have to do is run out the clock.
Wars cannot be ended, they are either won or they are lost and if an army pulls out in the face of an ongoing battle for the sake of "ending" a war, the enemy wins, we have retreated, we have abandoned the battlefield.
What a sad day for America that our President and commander in chief would give to his liberal friends a victory for our enemies which in their twisted world is a victory for them.
Obama's decision is a loss for America that a thousand more speeches in front of Hollywood sets can never repair.
