On more than one occassion I have been skeptical when Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear began talking about the Commonwealth's budget. That's because as everybody knows he has virtually pledged his soul to bringing casino gambling to Kentucky.
But this week when the Governor started talking about our finances he finally got the matter exactly right. Our situation calls for spending cuts.
Now there is no doubt this announcement by a democrat in Kentucky may very well be designed to sound the alarm among his tax and spend cronies in the legislature moving votes toward approving a ballot initiative on gambling, but so far talking about cuts is the exact right thing to do.
If the legislature wants to deal with spending cuts as an affront to their big government model of running things, then it is they who will have to answer to the people.
But so long as the Governor keeps trying to find ways to make government more austere, he deserves the congratulations of even this cynical old republican.
