When Barack Obama categorically stated that there was no Al Qaida in Iraq before the current war, you'd think a responsible press would call him on that, especially since they had themselves chronicled Al Qaidia's presence in Iraq years ago. But no.
Instead Obama's comments were passed along as if his ignorance was new found brilliance.
You might be think that the mainstream media cannot continue to get by with this deception. Judging by their behavior so far I suspect their answer to your concern would be, "Yes We Can".

You have made the classic mistake of thinking that what Obama said is outside the MSM thought process. In fact, Obama was just parroting the MSM propaganda on Iraq. So, they are not going to question him on it.
As for the MSM being close to losing credibility; they have already been there, done that.

Marc--
The article you cite is being disingenuous. Yes, we know that al-Zarqawi was was "in Iraq" before the invasion. But his safe haven was in northern Iraq, covered effectively by the allies no-fly zone established after the first Gulf War. That is the point of the NBC story cited-- Saddam had no effective control over that territory. If he had sent troops in the allies would have blown them to bits. Al-Zarqawi was operating under the tacit protection of the allies just as on another front the Kurds were able to establish their successful control over other northern areas because of Saddam's lack of control there. NBC was pointing out that if indeed the Bush administration thought al-Zarqawi was a real threat they could have removed him and only they could have done so. They did not because al-Zarqawi's presence was a convenient counter to Saddam in that area and (as is proven here) a great weapon in the propaganda department.
