Casino gambling is not new to Kentucky. For those who live in other parts of the Commonwealth this might come as a bit of a surprise, but not for those of us who were raised in Northern Kentucky.
In fact Las Vegas was developed partly in response to the first meaningful crackdown on what was then the gambling and nightlife Mecca of America, Newport Kentucky, or as it was known back then, “Little Mexico”. It was later dubbed “Sin City USA”.
For several decades gambling, prostitution and government corruption formed the sum and substance of Newport’s reputation. And it was well deserved.
Whenever old movies show mobsters wearing a dark suit, a dark shirt and a white tie, white belt and white shoes, maybe even a white hat band on a dark hat, they are paying homage to the real life gangsters who ran the syndicate in Newport, the Cleveland mob.
Much like gangs today wear “gang colors” or “gang uniforms”, urban legend has dubbed this stereotypical mob outfit as “The Full Cleveland”.
Northern Kentuckians have been raised on stories of “the old days” when places like The Lookout House, Beverly Hills and one joint after another along Monmouth and York Streets in Newport, and lesser known places in Cold Springs and Southgate, were home to wide open casinos, notorious mafia characters, and the scene of many criminal escapades.
What was the lure of these criminals and their culture of political corruption? The vast profits from gambling, spread around a little, just enough, to politicians to get them to look the other way.
As later installments will show, Steve BS is the perfect example of the kind of government “patsy” these elements are looking for.
It is said that those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. I urge you to click the link below and read more about the history of gambling in Kentucky. The web posting originally appeared in the Northern Kentucky edition of Better Living Magazine in February 2003.
